#73 Andrew Mulholland: The Korean War (William Collins, 2013)

History in an hour… well, more than an hour but concise, clear, highly readable. I’m not a history fan but I loved this! I held my breath while reading as if it was an adventure book and as if I didn’t know the end.

Despite being a kindle edition, it also contains photos of the war. The appendices consist of biographies, and interesting and useful data. It’s not pages and pages of dull tables that don’t reveal anything.

It gives a broader context, too. We are introduced to the preceding events, the players, and their motivation. It may really be the ‘forgotten war’. I definitely didn’t remember some parts. Actually, this was the first time I felt I understood what happened. This book gives a very clear overview.

In addition, it says Korean language is unique and not related to any of the neighbouring languages. As a Hungarian speaker, I can definitely relate to that.

History in an Hour is a series by a number of authors including Andrew Mulholland. Scanning the other books’ reviews, it seems to be a very good collection, for only £0.99 each on Amazon.
